After a long long journey we finally arrived at Maumere somewhere at the eastern part of the island of Flores. Our plan is to travel overland to Labuhanbajo, which is in the west. We will follow the Trans Flores Highway built by the Dutch and finalised in 1925 (we also did a few good things in our former colony). Now highway is relative, it is a small road, but it is a road. It is winding through beautiful lush green sceneries and in a car the average speed is around 30 km/h. We are happy there are no Dutch bikers here as they would complete the traffic chaos by overtaking the cars.
We are still very tired and the labor detoxification has not yet been completed. And than the 30 degrees (celcius my American friends) combined with 90% humidity, exhausting. Our first stop after Maumere is at Budi Sun Resort, a big name for a guesthouse, but we do rest and there is Sun. Budi is called Joseph.
The next day we travel to Moni with a 4 hours stop at Koka beach, this is paradise. We eat the catch of the day, some grilled fishes flushed away with fresh coconut. At Moni we are having our first dinner by candlelight as in the evening some tormenting rains wanted to explain to us the meaning of rainy season. With some new "friends" and Bintang beer the evening is great. Time to go to sleep on our bed covered with a Bayern Munchen spread, so not cool!!
At 4 AM we wake up to go up the volcano Kelimutu to see some beautiful lakes at sunrise. The lakes have different colours and these colours change over time by the minerals. Two of them are acidic, one is brine. Not real fit for swimming, but beautiful to see. After Kelimutu our driver Matt brings us to a hot spring. Not a great idea, slithering through the rice paddys without breakfast to end up in a poll of water smaller than my bath tub. So time for breakfast with surprise surprise banana pancakes we move towards Bajawa. No highlights, just beautiful Indonesia everywhere. There are hardly any tourists here, you only see a few at touristic attractions like the Kelimutu. Today we are moving to Ruteng
