Komodo and Rinca
Blijf op de hoogte en volg Katja & Rob

we finished our trip in Flores in Labuanbajo where we were planning to make a few dives as they claim to have amongst the most beautiful dives sites in the world. Unfortunately Katja suffers from some kind of infection in the upper lungs so we visit the local hospital to see a doctor and we get some medication, however no diving for the next days. So we decide to take the time to chill out a few days in Labuanbajo. As there are great restaurants and 2 really good coffeeshops, not in the Amsterdam meaning, but like places where you can drink coffee ( interesting concept!). The best place to eat is Warung Mama. A warung is a small local restaurant and the food is prepared in advance. We didn't see mama, but her food is delicious.
The last 3 days we spend on a boat, with our guide Sandy, captain Andi and 2 crew members. We visited the islands of Rinca, Padar and Komodo and a handfull of smaller islands where we made stops to snorkel around the reef. Besides the weather ( too much rain) it was great. Beautiful views of the islands, beautiful coral with hundreds types of fishesand of course the little trekkings to see the dragons. We perfected our mudsliding technique on slippers. We can now slide very slowly and elegantly into mudpools. The nights on the boat were interesting too, not only beacuse the cockroaches came out of their hidings, but also because of the other things happening around us. Monkeys trying to steal bananas, rats trying to enter the boat via the mooring rope, a giant manta ray feeding around our boat. The only strange thing was the little shield; beware of crocodiles? Weren't we snorkeling in this area before?
The last day was one of the highlights. We went to Manta Point where, guess what, you can spot manta rays. This is completely open ocean with fast currents and it took some courage to jump in with only fins and snorkel. But we did and we were rewarded with huge manta rays swimming under us as giant sailing ships. We even saw our first blacktip reef shark. So a thrilling and exciting experience. After this, and despite the many rainshowers we returned sunburned and happy to Labuanbajo and are ready for our jump to Papua (( Irian jaya), our next destination.
