From Paradise to Maluku

Raja Ampat..as close as we have been to Paradise. A thousand islands, the most beautiful underwater life you can imagine. We left Sorong with the fast ferry and were picked up by Freddy, owner of the homestay at Pulau Mansuar (Kri). As we approached the hut we were surprised by a pair of killer whales who are normally not seen in the warm waters around Raja Ampat.
We stayed at Koryau Kayem homestay, a simple thatched hut on stillts in the water. Simple matress on the ground with a mosquito net. 3 fantastic meals a day made by Freddy's wife. Showering only with mandi, a big bucket of water with a cannister to plunge the water over your head. We spend our days with snorkeling and being busy doing nothing. Time stands still. Our German neighbours Andrea and Siggy were experienced travellers and good company for a chat. Ore experienced than us, they brought their hammocks....we had hammocks on the picture, but not in real life. So...this will be on our essentials list for the next trip. Freddy took us with the boat to Cap Kri. My first jump into the deep blue was a little scary. Of course first one in the water when the others were still putting their gear on. Eye in eye with my first big reef shark who immediately came to me for a closer look. If i could have gone back in the boat I would have done it. In stead I called Katja to plunge in as well. More choice for the shark. Anyway apparently I was to big to swallow and thta day we saw a million fishes; Black tips, giant turtles, huge parrot fishes ( bumpheads), barracuda and all the small stuff like little clown fish. Next day we snorkeled amongs 4 giant manta rays, 3-4 meters wide and again uncountable fishes, especially around the jetty a few minutes from our "home"
After 3 days we had to return. Conclusion; too short, domit again, but longer. We returned to Sorong, had a meal at the waterfront with 5-10 rats walking over the table next to us and the dishes we used a few minutes later. And still we didn't get ill.
From sorong we took Wings Air to Ambon Citywhere we stayed one night. Many people here speak Dutch and a lot of children wear orange football shirts. The ultimate heroes are of course the Moluccan players like van Bronckhorst. At Sibu Sibu we took our coffee and this place breathes nostalgia about famous Moluccans in the Netherlands. Now we are chilling at a very quiet place near Ambon,; Collin Beach Resort without beach at Latuhalat. Christmas is close and we will spent it near here, at Natsepa, a little more upmarket hotel. We wish all readers a very happy christmas and great new year. We are looking forward to your comments ( in any language)

Dat klinkt inderdaad als paradijs. Wat een fantastische onderwater wereld, en orcas. Wat mooi!! Ik ben best een beetje jaloers! Fijn dat jullie lekker konden relaxen daar na jullie vorige plekje.

Hallo "globetrotters" vanochtend even mijn leesachterstand ingehaald. goed te lezen dat het jullie goed gaat en dat jullie heel veel mooie ervaringen opdoen, dat moet inderdaad geweldig zijn. Rob even nog een opmerking over het vorig verslag: Je wil de aboriginals in Alice Springs toch niet vergelijken met de Papoeas op Timor? De papoeas hebben geen keus en de aboriginals willen niet anders....
Gelukkig hoeven jullie daar geen honger te lijden en als jullie genoeg hebben van alle visdelicatessen dan kun je ook nog er voor kiezen om een paar ratten met pijl en boog te lijf te gaan. Die zijn heel goed te eten, gaan in Belgie nog steeds voor veel geld over de toonbank als "specialty" (heet dan wel waterkonijn). Dit moet toch wel weer wat andere perspectieven bieden.
Malaku klinkt inderdaas als een bio-vakantieoord daar kan je wel aan wennen lijkt me.
